 Debby A. Chessin & Virginia J. Moore (2004). The 6-E Learning Model. Science & Children, 42, 47-49.

Summary

The article discusses using the 5-E model of science instruction in the teaching of a topic of rocks, with a 6th E, E-search. In the Enhancement stage students are handed a K-W-L chart to help assess their previous knowledge about rocks. In the Exploration stage, the class is divided into groups of two and handed many rock samples. Each student is given a lens. Students are to observe teh rocks, document and discuss any properties or observations with their partners. in the explanation stage, teacher formally provides definitions using students prior knowledge and experience as a basis. Students also discuss the different ways they could sort their rocks - texture, weight, color, etc. In the extension stage, students play a "Guess me" game. Here groups sort their rocks and ask other groups to identify the sorting characteristics. They also are asked to classify other rock samples. In the evaluation stage, teh teacher asks open-ended questions, pencil and paper tests to assess students. The E-serch stage can be used at any stage in the form of internet search, taking digital pictures of rocks and sharing with class, video taping the students at work and playing back to the class.

Reaction

This is a very intuitive application of the classic learning approach. It adds a more exiting component of E-Search which I think is very relevant today. The class will be quite engaging and productive. The use of K-W-L adds a new dimension to the model.
